The Tweed’s location is a natural winner for tourism. Positioned
as it is on the southern border of the Gold Coast, with Brisbane less than 1½
hours by car and Sydney one hour by air (9 by car). Within minutes of the Gold Coast Airport and
with an overnight passenger rail link to
Sydney, the Tweed is readily accessible.
Surrounded by rainforests and National
Parks and with the Tweed River and its tributaries flowing through the region,
the Tweed has many attractions for visitors and provides a great environment for
residents.
The Tweed is the sort of place where you can do anything - or nothing. From
relaxing by the pool at your chosen accommodation, to hiking around a National Park or
walking up Mount Warning
to take in the view; from a dip in the cold waters of
Natural Arch
by day to gazing in wonder at Australia's largest glow worm colony in the same
place by night; from small group 4WD
rainforest adventure tours, horse-riding,
scenic joy-flights in a
replica bi-plane or gyro plane, a round of golf,
to fishing for your own crab lunch or gourmet seafood dining with Tweed
River Catch a Crab tours, river cruises, water sports, theme
parks and much, much more.
Accommodations vary from apartments, hotels and motels in
Tweed Heads and Tweed South, 5 star complexes on the Tweed Coast, to boutique bed
and breakfasts and eco tourism resorts in the hinterland.
As well as pristine rainforests, impressive mountains and
beautiful countryside, the Tweed
area is a haven for local craftspeople and you’ll enjoy discovering the many
galleries and craft shops which display their wares or take a visit to the art gallery
in Murwillumbah which hosts the richest portrait prize in Australia (the Doug
Moran prize).
The climate of the Tweed is an added bonus: never too cold and rarely too
hot, the balmy days of winter are especially attractive. It really is
possible to enjoy the great outdoors all year round.
The history of the Tweed is reflected in some of the wonderful old buildings,
including the heritage listed village of Uki and "Lisnagar" homestead,
for those wanting to step back in time. For those wanting to go further back in
history, the Midginbil Aboriginal Museum offers insights into our Aboriginal
heritage and culture. Going back in time even further, the magnificent
rainforests, with trees thousands of years old, the rock formations and
mountains leave one in awe and inspired by the beauty.
Murwillumbah Rainforest and Information
Centre is located just off the Pacific Highway at the main entry road into
town. There is also a Tourist
Information Centre in Tweed Heads on the northern gateway to the Tweed. In the year 2000
over 50,000 tourists were assisted by both the small contingent of full-time
paid staff and larger contingent of local volunteers in both centres, with many
more accessing the information available without needing personal
assistance. With the Tweed being increasingly seen as a destination in its
own right, rather than an "overnight stop" on the way to the Gold Coast
or Byron Shire, that number is set to increase annually.
The
growing tourism industry in the Tweed Shire is based on sustainable or "eco-tourism".
The Shire Council, in conjunction with tourism operators and residents, is keen
to ensure the natural beauty of the region remains uncompromised by
inappropriate tourism developments. This ensures the continued attraction
of the area to both domestic and international tourism.
